I have spent more predawn mornings alone in the North Dakota Badlands than I can count. The routine is usually the same: alarm at 3:30am, drive in the dark, hike a ridge, set the tripod, and wait. Sometimes the light cooperates. Sometimes the clouds swallow the horizon before anything interesting happens. Sometimes you drive two hours, hike a ridge in the cold, and walk away with nothing. That is the work. The work is showing up when the outcome is uncertain, over and over, for years.

And then there are mornings like this one. The light poured over the hills like liquid gold. The grasslands ignited. The buttes, which I had seen a hundred times in flat gray light, suddenly had dimension and warmth and presence. That is what "triumphant" means in the context of this image. Not conquest.
